♫ 1707 - Isaac Watts

Isaac Watts
(1674-1748)

Awake, Ye Saints; To Praise Your King
"Идолы народов - серебро и золото, Дело рук человеческих. Есть у них уста, но не говорят, Есть у них глаза, но не видят, есть у них уши, но не слышат, И нет духа в их устах". Псалом 135:15-17

Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

Words: Isaac Watts, The Psalms of David, 1719, alt. The last verse originally started, O Britain, know thy living God.
Music: New Britain, in Virginia Harmony, by James P. Carrell David S. Clayton (Winchester, Virginia: 1831) ().
Awake, ye saints; to praise your king
Your sweetest passions raise,
Your pious pleasure, while you sing,
Increasing with the praise.
Great is the Lord, and works unknown
Are His divine employ;
But still His saints are near His throne,
His treasure and His joy.
Heav’n, earth, and sea confess His hand;
He bids the vapors rise;
Lightning and storm at His command
Sweep through the sounding skies.
All power that gods or kings have claimed
Is found with Him alone;
But heathen gods should ne’er be named
Where our Jehovah’s known.
Which of the stock or stones they trust
Can give them showers of rain?
In vain they worship glittering dust,
And pray to gold in vain.
Their gods have tongues that cannot talk,
Such as their makers gave;
Ther feet were ne’er designed to walk,
Nor hands have power to save.
Blind are their eyes, their ears are deaf,
Nor near when mortals pray;
Mortals that wait for their relief
Are blind and deaf as they.
O nations, know thy living God,
Serve Him with faith and fear;
He makes thy churches His abode,
And claims thine honors there.

1. NEW CANAAN [NH 34–35]
The Lord JEHOVAH Reigns
“Иегова воцарился! Он облачился в величие,” Psalm 93 sts. 1–3, 5.
Mood: Allegro.

The Lord Jehovah reigns,
And royal state maintains,
His head with awful glories crown’d;
Array’d in robes of light,
Begirt with sov’reign might,
And rays of majesty around.

Upheld by thy commands,
The world securely stands,
And skies and stars obey thy word;
Thy throne was fix’d on high
Before the starry sky:
Eternal is thy kingdom, Lord.

In vain the noisy crowd,
Like billows fierce and loud,
Against thine empire rage and roar:
In vain, with angry spite,
The surly nations fight,
And dash like waves against the shore.

Thy promises are true,
Thy grace is ever new:
There fix’d thy church shall n’er remove;
Thy saints with holy fear
Shall in thy courts appear,
And sing thine everlasting love

Sing To The Lord JEHOVAH’S Name
“Придите, воскликнем радостно Иегове! Будем восклицать Скале нашего спасения с ликованием” Psalm 95:1
portrait

William Croft (1678-1727)

Words: Isaac WattsThe Psalms of David1719.
Music: St. AnneWilliam Croft, 1708 ( ).
Sing to the Lord Jehovah’s name,
And in His strength rejoice;
When His salvation is our theme,
Exalted be our voice.
With thanks approach His awful sight,
And psalms of honor sing;
The Lord’s a God of endless might,
The whole creation’s king.
Let princes hear, and angels know,
How mean their natures seem,
These gods on high and gods below,
When once compared with Him.
Earth, with its caverns dark and deep,
Lies in His spacious hand;
He fixed the seas what bounds to keep,
And where the hills must stand.
Come, and with humble souls adore,
Come, kneel before His face;
O may the creatures of His power
Be children of His grace!
Now is the time; He bends His ear,
And waits for your request;
Come, lest He rouse His wrath and swear,
Ye shall not see My rest."

JEHOVAH Reigns — He Dwells In Light
1719
"Хорошо воздавать благодарность Иегове, Воспевать под музыку твоё имя, о Всевышний" Псалом 93:1

Music: Alexander R. Reinagle (1799-1877), 1868 (     )

Words: Isaac WattsThe Psalms of David1719.

Jehovah reigns—He dwells in light,
Girded with majesty and might:
The world, created by His hands,
Still on its first foundation stands.

But ere this spacious world was made,
Or had its first foundation laid,
Thy throne eternal ages stood,
Thyself the ever-living God.

Like floods, the angry nations rise,
And aim their rage against the skies;
Vain floods, that aim their rage so high!
At Thy rebuke the billows die.

For ever shall Thy throne endure;
Thy promise stands for ever sure;
And everlasting holiness
Becomes the dwellings of Thy grace.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

The Lord Jehovah reigns; His throne is built on high.
The garments He assumes are light and majesty.
His glories shine
With beams so bright no mortal eye
Can bear the sight.
The thunders of His hand keep the wide world in awe;
His wrath and justice stand to guard His holy law.
And where His love
Resolves to bless His truth confirms
And seals the grace.
Through all His mighty works surprising wisdom shines—
Confounds the powers of hell, and breaks their cursed designs.
Strong is His arm,
And shall fulfill His great decrees,
His sovereign will.
And will this mighty king of glory condescend,
And will He write His name: My Father and my friend?
I love His name;
I love His Word. Join, all my powers,
And praise the Lord!

JEHOVAH Speaks, Let Israel Hear
Hymn 1:84
"Хорошо воздавать благодарность Иегове, Воспевать под музыку твоё имя, о Всевышний" Псалом 93:1
Salvation, righteousness, and strength in Christ,
Isa. 45. 21 25.

Jehovah speaks, let Israel hear,
Let all the earth rejoice and fear,
While God's eternal Son proclaims
His sovereign honours and his names:

"I am the last, and I the first,
"The Saviour God, and God the just;
"There's none beside pretends to shew
"Such justice and salvation too.

"[Ye that in shades of darkness dwell,
"Just on the verge of death and hell,
"Look up to me from distant lands,
"Light, life and heaven are in my hands.

"I by my holy Name have sworn,
"Nor shall the word in vain return,
"To me shall all things bend the knee,
"And every tongue shall swear to me.]

"In me alone shall men confess
"Lies all their strength and righteousness;
"But such as dare despise my Name,
"I'll clothe them with eternal shame.

"In me the Lord, shall all the seed
"Of Israel from their sins be freed,
"And by their shining graces prove
"Their interest in my pardoning love."

JEHOVAH Reigns, His Throne Is&nbHigh
Hymn 2:168
Jehovah reigns, his throne is high,
His robes are light and majesty;
His glory shines with beams so bright
No mortal can sustain the sight.

His terrors keep the world in awe,
His justice guards his holy law;
His love reveals a smiling face,
His truth and promise seal the grace.

Thro' all his works his wisdom shines,
And baffles Satan's deep designs;
His power is sovereign to fulfil
The noblest counsels of his will.

And will this glorious Lord descend
To be my father and my friend?
Then let my songs with angels join;
Heaven is secure if God be mine.
